Paula Curci
Paula Curci is the Nassau County Poet Laureate Emerita (2022-2024). She is the producer of Calliope’s Corner and What’s The Buzz® on WRHU, where she is also the Poet in Residence, and has been on the air interviewing poets and writers for the past two decades. More recently, as a Poet Correspondent, Paula has been interviewing open mic hosts and other creatives for the print magazine THE SCENE.LIFE. For the span of her career, she has facilitated introspective writing and self-development workshops. Most recently, she has conducted free verse introspective writing workshops at the Hope Center (The Vault), the Long Beach Public Library, and the Uniondale Library. She co-founded the Acoustic Poets Network® and has conducted various spoken word audio and community engagement projects under its brand. These programs include her poet laureate visitation projects’ Poetry as Memoir lecture for The Italian American Experience at Hofstra University and for Port Washington Library’s Sandwiched In program, Merrick Library’s Teen Spoken Word Workshop, and the I Am Poetry presentation at Sacred Heart Academy. With the Acoustic Poets Network®, Paula has produced “Emissary”, “Bittersweet”, and “Done That- Poetry and Posics™-The Audio Version,” all of which highlight her style of recitation, called Posics™. Paula has co-founded the SHORE POETS open mic, the home of her micro-memoir project, and the Poetry: It’s a ‘Shore’ Thing! ™ Poetry Festival at the Long Beach Public Library. She hosts the Hicksville Library open mic and the Port Washington Library’s poetry reading circle and has spearheaded the Power of Poetry event at the Uniondale Library. Paula is the co-editor of “Poetry: It’s a ‘Shore’ Thing! In an Unsure World. An Anthology of Micro Memoirs from the South Shore Poets of Long Island.” Paula has authored several chapbooks, including “One Woman’s Cathartic Release in Poetry”, “Done That”, “The Gift of Thanksgiving”, and “Occasion Poems.” Paula also receives two SCR- NYSCA grants for The Word Festival of the Spoken and Written Word: Celebrating all Voices in Oceanside, NY, and her recent book of poetry and photography, “Portrait Poems.” Paula was honored by the Nassau County School Counselors’ Association as a School Counselor of the Year and is a March of Dimes Golden Apple winner. She is a Gracie and an Artists in Partnership Woman in the Arts awardee. She has received several awards from the Press Club of Long Island for her broadcasts on education, health, and the arts and several citations for her contributions to the arts from the city of Long Beach and Nassau County. The SHORE POETS’ Poetry: It’s a ‘Shore’ Thing! ™ Open Mic is the second Wednesday of every month at the Long Beach Public Library. 111 West Park Avenue Long Beach, NY. Meet and greet starts at 6:30 PM, and the open begins at 7pm. All encouraging voices are welcome.
